After shooting Mono Lake the day previous at sunset, I ventured out from Lee Vining early to see what the sunrise might provide. The wind was coming out of the south and there were ripples on the lake--not exactly what I was hoping for... I turned the camera to catch the setting moon over the Sierra Nevada range and waited until the sun rose a little higher.
The sky turned pink as the sun started to rise, just as it had at sunset the day previous. The moon was dropping a little faster than I wanted, so I had to shoot while the moon was about two stops brighter than the available sunlight. Though I lost the details in the moon, it still provides a somewhat surreal shot with the tufa formations in the foreground. Seems almost like another planet with the unusual landscape. Still, it was a wonderful sunrise and the pink glow on the snow of the Sierra's was quite breathtaking...
