It was raining when we arrived at Death Valley National park in February 2009. 2-inches of rain over the weekend put an initial damper on our visions of photographing Death Valley.
Finally on Sunday afternoon, at around 5:30 PM the sun broke through a small slit of open sky near the horizon to the west. Positioned along the road at Mesquite Dunes, we finally began to shoot in some fantastic transitional weather. Low clouds hanging around, snow above 4500 feet, and a little light helped capture this image of the dunes. Shooting with my Pentax SMC 400-mm EDIF lens, I took a sequence of three shots to stitch into a great panoramic. It is a bit wider than the cropped image on my website's homepage. Finally, we were in business and the unusual weather was finally in our favor. The next morning, we shot the Valley from Zabriskie Point (next image).
This print is available in other sizes and also looks good in a strong vertical with more of the mountains in the top of the print. Please contact me for the size you desire and format--whether horizontal, vertical or square. Also available in gallery-wrapped canvas for a more open look.
