In 2005, I started Jerry Miller Photography to devote my full time to producing fine-art prints from my stock of slides and film. Innovations in computer technology, software, and particularly in printers and inks provided the tools I could now use to produce my own prints. The age of the '"digital darkroom" had arrived. My subjects include architecture, landscapes, nature and people. Abstract photography is an area I plan to pursue, but I'm still perfecting the landscapes and nature shots that so intrigue me. Why do I do Photography?
I love it! My greatest creative outlet is photography, since it preserves a visual legacy of my travels and the things that interest me. Light is the most important element in my creative arsenal--and often dictates the time to capture a subject-- be it early morning, late evening or at night.
Image composition plays an important role in my work and I look for elements of symmetry, balance, line and form. Perspective is critical to my work, since it often portrays a subject from a certain vantage point--lending to a mood, a feeling or sense of prescience.
Clarity and resolution in my photographs are two of my "technical" goals, particularly important when printing large images. I use a tripod and good optics to capture the highest image resolution for my work. This is an essential "first step" for all photographers, especially when the end product is sold to the public. Film development I leave to a professional lab that can provide consistent results and meet my expectations.
Using a variety of fine-grained slide and print films, I scan my images using a Nikon Coolscan® LS-8000 ED dedicated film scanner, digitizing my images for processing by computer. Using Adobe Photoshop® graphics software, my images are adjusted for saturation, tonality, and color to produce my vision of how each image should be portrayed. These digitized images are then proof printed on my Epson® wide format inkjet printers which utilize archival pigment inks. Final prints are then matted and may be framed as well. I prefer to print on archival matte papers and canvas, experimenting with new materials as they become available.
Archival materials are employed in matting and framing to ensure the longevity of my photographic prints. The mattes I cut are either acid-free conservation or rag mattes. Premium glass complements most prints, with conservation and museum glass available as an option. The frames I use are made from hardwood, and I typically do not use metal frames, though they are certainly available for my patrons. Matted prints are available for those who wish to frame their own, and upon request I will provide prints only. Canvas is also available in gallery wraps or framed. I will be happy to accommodate special requests to help meet the needs of my customers.
The work you see on my website reflects my love of photography and the "moments" it captures. I hope you enjoy my endeavors in photography and that you may be inspired by what you see. Please remember: images you may see on my website never look as good as the image itself--they always look better printed!
So stay tuned for more adventures as I add new images to my portfolio! And if you're an aspiring photographer, don't forget to
